I knew there was something wrong

I had my follow up appointment about my tooth/ sinuses this afternoon.  The CT scan was done last August.

I've known all along that things didn't feel right, and since I had sinusitis at the end of November it has been worse than ever.

Today I was shown the CT scan.

There is a large tooth root lodged in my sinus cavity, directly above the extraction site. The scan showed it surrounded by an extensive area of infection. That infection has prevented new bone forming, which accounts for the hollow feeling underneath my gum, and also accounts for the throbbing, the swelling that makes me look like a hamster, and the daily pain in my teeth, my nose, my cheekbones and my head.

I've been listed for surgery. His list waiting time is usually 6 to 8 months. He said he would do his best to operate sooner as in his words,  'You've suffered long enough'.

The plan is to go in through the extraction site, remove the root, clean out the infection, wash out my sinuses, and repair the hole with some fat and skin from the inside of my cheek, all of which will hopefully encourage the bone to grow.

He's told me the aftermath will be miserable, but it needs to be done, and living with a throbbing, painful, swollen face for the last 14 months has been pretty miserable too.

No wonder I feel permanently washed out.

Now,  I wait again for a date for it to be done.

  1. Thoroughly miserable for you. Thank goodness the consultant agrees and has given you hope, and didn't try to downplay anything. I hope he can get you in soon. xx

    1. I hope so too. I'm just relieved I won't be awake whilst it's being done!

  2. Oh that is so not right that you've been pushed aside for treatment for so long. I hope he can work scheduling magic and it gets done as soon as possible.

    1. I've had the pre-op questionnaire through and returned it. Now I await a phone call from them. Things move very slowly with the NHS these days.

    1. Yes, and I never know what to attribute it to, though the inflammation and infection will have exacerbated the ME/CFS. Fingers crossed, although I'm not looking forward to the aftermath if it's anything like the initial extraction, which traumatic and complicated.

  4. Sometimes if the wait is over 3 months you can elect to go to another hospital with less waiting time if such a thing exists. Might be worth enquiring in may? Debbie x

    1. Thanks for letting me know, though I am quite reluctant to travel to a hospital I don't know to have surgery.

    2. Thanks, Scarlet - he's having the second stage of the procedure today (where they will implant the computer) but already his knee pain has eased.
